The Problem
Litigators are extremely busy — and Relativity, a robust legal review platform, was overwhelming and hard to use. Many users described the platform as dated compared to modern competitors.
Key user pain points:
- Poor discoverability of key facts and documents
- Duplicated, messy information (facts/entities)
- Rigid workflows misaligned with litigation strategy
- Insufficient support for AI-generated insights
Project Goals
1. Transform first-pass review to streamline workflows.
2. Turn litigators into champion users through intuitive design.

Design Process
Discovery & Research:
- Conducted interviews with target users (litigators, case team members).
- Mapped user journeys for deposition prep and fact analysis.
- Analyzed competitor tools like Everlaw.
- Synthesized pain points into actionable insights.
Key Research Insights:
- Users want to collect and organize facts for depositions with minimal friction.
- Litigators prefer a fact-first interface, rather than traditional document review.
- Current UI lacked clarity and flexibility.
- Search needed to go beyond just fact names — support for descriptions, citations, and filters was critical.
Prototyping Approach
I adopted a Prototype-First workflow:
- Built interactive flows in Figma before engineering started.
- Collaborated closely with engineers to ensure feasibility.
- Conducted usability testing early and often.
- Focused on making realistic AI interactions despite their non-deterministic nature.
Design Solutions
We built Fact Navigator, a flexible, modern UI layer for Relativity's aiR platform.
What Worked Well:

Impact
After launch, weekly engagement continued to grow as more Strategic Legal Users adopted the feature. Rather than relying solely on administrators, usage expanded across the broader legal team, validating key design decisions around simplifying complex workflows and reducing friction. The sustained growth over several months demonstrated that the solution provided ongoing value beyond the initial rollout.
Opportunities to Address
